Figure 5.1: The zones.

People who habitually think like this not only limit their opportunities for growth, but they also, very likely, limit their chances for happiness. We are often at our happiest when we learn to get better at something, to overcome and master challenges, and when we get a great buzz from having done so.

Grow Your Comfort Zone

The less you venture into the growth zone, the smaller your comfort zone will become. Negative beliefs tend to multiply and support each other. The consequence is an increasingly negative self-image. “The less you do, the less you can do” as the saying goes. On the other hand, taking one small step every day toward your target will soon add up. Sometimes, without you even realizing, you will find you are more willing to try new things, go to new places and make deeper, more personal contact with others. You discover that “the more you do, the more you can do.”

Why are some people happy, successful and resilient? Because they are willing to be open-minded, resourceful and brave enough to learn, and to accept the risk of “failure.” They know that they will often make mistakes and that learning from them and moving on are essential for growth. They are willing to look to others as role models, are open to advice, and they take and act upon feedback. They also feel that there is nothing quite as rewarding as making progress in something that is genuinely difficult. They understand that “if you don’t use it, you lose it” and that learning sets up new neural pathways in the brain. Carol Dweck’s extensive research on this topic in her book Mindset: The Psychology of Success shows us clearly the difference that a belief in learning can make to fulfilling your potential in life.
